He comes to Ferlieview with his family, hoping distance from the agency will let them rebuild. Instead he notices the inconsistencies. Residents tell different versions of the same events. Old maps show roads that no longer exist. Tourists remember visiting places that cannot be found. People use private names and nicknames they should not know.
In Ferlieview, everybody may be telling the truth from their own point of view.
His profiling techniques fail — because Ferlieview does not behave like a criminal investigation. Benjamin must learn that identifying deception is not the same as understanding the truth. His greatest challenge is not solving the mystery. It is convincing people that he deserves to know it.
